100 meter Swim, 4k Bike & 1k Run

This was bound to happen, right? Over the weekend, M participated in her first triathlon—the Chicago Kids Triathlon. She was one of the youngest (they allow 7-14 year olds) but she put the training time in! Chris had her training for a good 3 weeks before the race. Brick workouts as the tri peeps call it. She biked around the neighborhood or to the pool or to the farmer’s market then each time she would immediately hope off the bike, put on her running shoes and sports head band then take off around the block a few times.

The triathlon didn’t work out quite as we expected. There was a little incident between the swim and getting into the transition for the bike. Actually, it was a BIG incident—she got LOST—for a good 10 minutes we couldn’t find her!! Needless to say, I was close to losing my mind but she was fine—she had walked out of transition to get some water at the finish line and could not find her way back to the transition area. With a lot of encouragement from Chris (I was holding on to her for dear life so I was not much help at this point), she stuck with it. She skipped the bike portion of the race (to which our little rule follower said “Is that allowed?”), put her running shoes on and FINISHED THE RACE!!!

It’s definitely a huge accomplishment for these kids to finish the race but I was even more proud that after having such a scary moment she was resilient. She completed what she set her mind on. That’s what I am most proud of.

CONGRATULATIONS, M. WE ARE SO INCREDIBABLY PROUD OF YOU!!!!
